Gulf Plains Bioregion

Burketown, situated in the Gulf Plains Bioregion, hosts a rich array of native fauna and flora. Our beautiful natural surrounds and proposed visitor activities provide opportunities for getting up close and enjoying what our country has to offer. There are also introduced species and pests that are important to be aware of as you travel through.

For a comprehensive species list and incidence map visit the Atlas of Living Australia - Gulf Plains Bioregion. Visit Visit our fishing and birdwatching pages for relevant information. The region includes such unique finds as the Gulf Snapping Turtle (Lavarackorum elseya), identified as a denizen of Lawn Hill Gorge and until recently believed to have become extinct due to massive climatic change during the Pleistocene age. Previously the only evidence of the ancient turtle was a single fossil found at Riversleigh.

Wildlife Hazards

Australia and the Gulf region is home to wildlife that can pose a hazard to health and, yes, even life. Remember to be Crocwise in Croc country!  It's also worth being attentive to various species of snakes, spiders, and marine animals.
