Going west from Burke Shire
From Adels Grove you can head north towards Doomadgee and then onto Hells Gate Roadhouse, your last fuel stop for a couple hundred kms.
Next stop over the border into the Territory is Seven Emu: www.sevenemustation.com.au and costs $50/vehicle/night at the Drovers Camp which a lot of people rave about. You have to cross the Robinson River to access the station homestead, which varies in height throughout the year so you make sure you ring the station prior to arrival to check the road conditions. At the same turn off, or very close together is Manangoora Fishing Camp, which is a further 30km from the main road turn off: www.managoora.com.au. It doesn’t have any facilities, so you need to be fully self-sufficient.
Borroloola also has houseboats for hire that start at $90/person/day, plus fuel: www.borroloolahouseboats.com. These are based at King Ash Bay which is another renowned fishing destination.
As you head towards Cape Crawford you will see a sign for Carabarini Conservation Reserve. Make sure you stop and wonder through the sandstone pillars of one of the areas Lost Cities (the Lost Cities are a series of sandstone pillars grouped together in three different locations). This one is the smallest of all of them, but the most accessible. NT Parks and Wildlife have named this the most pretty conservation reserve in the entire Territory.
You can do a chopper flight out of Heartbreak Hotel at Cape Crawford out over the Southern Lost City: www.heartbreakhotel.com.au. They have power sites from $28/couple/night, or unpowered at $20/night.
Heading back north towards the Gulf from here will take you into Limmen National Park. Make sure you duck in and look at Butterfly Falls, which for the most part has water and is a beautiful, croc free swimming spot with great facilities that includes BBQ areas, toilets camping platforms.
Next spot is Lorella Springs: www.lorellasprings.com.au. Those that have made the trek into Lorrella always have impressive tales of wide-open landscapes and ancient waterways that impress on a staggering scale, particularly earlier in the year when it’s a bit greener. The homestead is a bit rough and ready, so you might need to contact them to see if you can get the van in. It will cost you $40/night. After Lorella there are more campsites within Limmen National Park on the way to Roper Bar on particular favourites include the Western Lost City that allows for dramatic senset photos from within the pillars and Tomato Island with its access to fishing. After you leave Roper Bar for Mataranka, you will pass through Elsey National Park with its thermal pools and crystal clear swimming holes.
